For a painted finish we recommend a solvent-based primer and compatible second coat.

You can either paint before or after assembly. Wood left unfinished in inclement weather, even for a short time, will develop water-stain marks. If this happens, seal your structure with a coat of shellac before painting to prevent the water marks from "bleeding" and showing through the paint coat. For best results, follow the advice of a good paint dealer.
